Google’s Gboard is one of the most popular digital keyboards on Android, and it comes with a ton of amazing features. Well, the company is testing a new feature that will allow you to scan and insert text from the real world. According to a new report, Google is testing a feature that allows Gboard to scan text with an integrated camera.

Gboard recently gained the ability to proofread selected text on Pixel 8 devices. A few months ago, Google unveiled an in-depth proofreading feature for Google allows you to proofread full bodies of text. However, the company recently added the ability to proofread only text that’s been selected. So, if you only want to proofread one sentence in a paragraph, you can do so.

There are different ways for you to analyze text on your Android phone, but Google wants to provide you with even more ways. Right now, if you have the Google widget on your home screen, you can quickly access Google Lens to scan text in the real world. However, what if you don’t feel like leaving the app that you’re in to scan text?

Say, you’re texting a friend, and you want to show them the name of a restaurant or the text that’s on the nearby sign. Well, if you don’t want to leave the texting app you’re using and go to Google Lens, the company has a way of quickly letting you scan text with zero hassle. According to reports, the company is testing a text-scanning feature within Gboard.

To use it, you will access a camera feature that’s right in Gboard. Using the camera, you’ll take a picture of the text. It will then scan the text within the picture, and the AI will recognize it. At that point, you’ll then be able to select whatever text in the image you want to copy, and then tap the Insert button. This will put the text into the message, so you’ll be able to edit it and send it.

Gboard can scan text with the camera in the beta version of the app. So, if you are on the stable version, you will not be able to see it. Also, even if you’re on the beta, there’s no guarantee that you will be selected for the test. So, if you don’t see it, you’ll just have to wait for it to hit your device.
