A bug inside the Apple App Store reporting platform suddenly made several developers millionaires. Some developers found their earnings jump 999% more than their usual figures.

Apple App Store Connect reported some developers earning millions of dollars

Several developers, who offer their creations on the Apple App Store, were pleasantly surprised over the weekend. Their App Store Connect dashboard was reportedly showing unusual spikes in earnings at specific time intervals.

The App Store Connect dashboard indicated some apps had amassed millions of dollars of revenue in a very short interval of time. Needless to say, the majority of the developers were skeptical. They soon realized this was a bug inside the App Store Connect.

App Store Connect is a platform that offers developers analytics such as downloads, earnings, and other figures about their apps listed on the Apple iOS App Store. Being Apple’s platform, it is deeply ingrained within the App Store and hence offers very accurate statistics.

However, several developers took to social media platforms claiming their Sales and Proceeds data on the App Store Connect was massively inaccurate. Just within a 24-hour window, some developers could see huge spikes. Peculiarly, some of the spikes were at odd hours.

Simply put, App Store Connect informed some developers they had earned millions of dollars within a few short hours. App earnings do experience spikes. However, these were abnormally high, and that too, without any planned or accidental promotions.

Apple Inc. fixing the bug that made some developers millionaires on paper

Apple Inc. has reportedly acknowledged the bug inside “App Store Connect” software. The iPhone maker has posted a message on the App Store Connect page, which reads,

“An issue exists with Sales and Proceeds data in the 24-hour view from April 10, 2024, 10 p.m. UTC. We are working on resolving this.”

The majority of developers knew instantly this was a glitch. However, such abnormal reporting may have a detrimental impact on automated algorithms, some experts have reportedly observed.

Any system that would base its actions on reports from App Store Connect, may go awry, a Mastodon user observed. If a business proportionally matched its App Store ad spend with its earnings per hour, such bugs could cause massive expenditure.

Incidentally, Apple does have several safeguards to prevent such mishaps. Moreover, the company can issue a refund if its internal investigations suggest so.
