Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra drop wireless charging with your phone

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra AM AH 08

The Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra launched yesterday with significant improvements compared to previous generations. The smartwatches arrived alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, whose enhancements were more discreet. That said, it seems that the Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra unexpectedly lost a feature: wireless charging with your phone.

Multiple phones with wireless charging support also offer reverse wireless charging. This means you can use the phone as a “charging pad” to charge compatible products. Supported Galaxy phones use the “Wireless PowerShare” branding for this feature. However, if you are one of those who occasionally charges your watch this way, there is bad news.

You can’t use your phone’s reverse wireless charging with your Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra

JordyV27 posted on X/Twitter a Samsung support page about the fast charging capabilities of its latest smartwatches. The support site confirms that the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra do not support reverse wireless charging using your phone. This is due to a revamped health and physical activity monitoring sensor. Now, there is more “distance between the internal wireless charging coil of your Watch and the wireless charger.”

Samsung is probably talking about the new BioActive sensor that they launched a few days ago. Be that as it may, the company decided to sacrifice the option of charging your watch with your phone in favor of more precise metrics. Taking into account the goal of these devices, it seems like the right decision. Perhaps the feature will return to future Galaxy Watch models. After all, these types of technologies tend toward miniaturization. However, this is pure speculation at the moment.

Older chargers will cause slower charging and generate more heat

The new sensor design also affects the performance of older chargers. The support site warns that using older model chargers on the Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra will result in slower charging. It even says that they will generate more heat during the process. The latter can accelerate battery degradation over time. So, it is best to use exclusively the chargers included with the company’s latest smartwatches.
