Google tests some questionable changes in the Search app

Google Search Bottom Bar

The quickest and easiest way to access Google on your Android phone is through the Google app. You’re met with a search bar, Google News headlines, and a bottom bar with a shortcut to the search bar. Well, according to a new report, Google could remove the search shortcut from the bottom bar.

This news comes from an APK deep-dive. This means that Assemble Debug dove into the APK for the latest version of the Google app to see what new features or changes are possible down the pipeline. However, this isn’t a guarantee that these changes will come. Google could remove these changes at a moment’s notice. Take this news with a grain of salt.

Google could remove the Search shortcut from the Google app bottom bar

Looking at the information gleaned from the deep-dive, it looks like Google is testing out some potential changes to the Google app. The strange thing about it is that all of these tests involve getting rid of the search shortcut.

On the bottom bar in the most recent version, we see the Search button right between the Home and Saved buttons. When you tap on it, it will take you right to the search bar with your past searches and suggestions below.

In the first screenshot below, we see that the Search button was simply taken out, leaving the Home and Saved buttons. The second one shows the Home and Share button. Lastly, the third screenshot is the only one that shows more than two buttons at the bottom. We see the Home and Saved buttons along with what looks like a Grid button (that might change the view to show the headlines in a grid format) and a notification bell.

It seems odd that Google is taking away a shortcut to the headlining feature of the app. However, the search bar is easily accessible. When you’ve scrolled all the way to the top, you’ll see the search bar displayed prominently at the top. If you’ve scrolled down a bit, all you have to do is scroll up a little, and you’ll see a little bar appear at the top.

There’s no telling if the company is going to go through with this change. We’ll just have to wait to see.
