There have been reports of a Samsung XR device floating around for a while now. The company has been working with Google since early 2023 to make the product a reality. There was a shift during the development process, changing the form factor from XR headsets to smart glasses. Now, a report claims that we will finally meet Samsung smart glasses in January 2025. However, maybe not in the way you expected.
Samsung smart glasses could debut in January 2025, but only with images
Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm have been working closely on the development of the device. Previous reports claimed that a developer version was planned for October 2024, which ultimately did not happen. The latest leak claims that Samsung will use the January 2025 Unpacked event to show off its smart glasses. That said, it may not be a definitive presentation of the product, but rather an initial reveal of a prototype through images and videos.
According to leaks, Samsung will hold the event, where it will also launch the Galaxy S25 series, on January 22 or 23. It seems that the brand is liking the early presentation format of new products. It revealed its first Galaxy Ring to the world in this way, confirming the design and name of the device in early 2024. The Yonhap News report adds that the launch of the Samsung smart glasses to the commercial market will take place sometime in Q3 2025.
Samsung’s smart glasses will compete directly against the popular Ray-Ban Meta. They are expected to support AI-powered features via Gemini, although there are no more specific details about their functions yet. The wearable form factor is comfortable and portable but raises some concerns about the product’s battery life. Reports indicate that a Snapdragon AR1 chip will power the device, and a 155 mAh battery will power the lights. The glasses could integrate a 12MP camera for people and environment recognition. The product would have a weight of 50 grams.
Samsung and Google’s XR platform to be announced this month
We may not have to wait until 2025 to see the software for XR platforms developed by Google and Samsung. The report states that Samsung will reveal it this month, although the exact date is unknown. This is when we will finally learn more about the true capabilities of the upcoming smart glasses. Although it is said that the device will not have a screen, the software features (or most of them) should be available.
