We’ve been waiting and waiting, and now the wait is over! Apple finally took the wraps off of its iPhone SE 4 iPhone 16e. This is the latest addition to the company’s affordable smartphone line and the latest addition to the iPhone 16 line. With it, we see some pretty big changes to the company’s budget-friendly handset and a new chip.
What’s this new chip?
Before diving into the new phone, Apple showed off some new silicon. Most people won’t really care all that much, but Apple has been working on a new modem for its devices. Until now, the company has been using modems from other brands, but you know Apple. It’s the company that wants to control it all.
This new modem is called the Apple C1 chip. According to Apple, it’s the most power-efficient modem ever in an iPhone. That’s saying a lot, but we’ll have to wait until we see it in action.
Apple unveiled the new iPhone 16e
While we give Apple some credit for effort, we wouldn’t quite call its “budget-friendly” phones as such. However, they’ve been a viable onramp into the Apple ecosystem, and they haven’t shown any signs of being underpowered.
After several years since the iPhone SE 3, Apple has finally introduced its spiritual successor, the iPhone 16e. As the name suggests, this is technically an addition to the company’s iPhone 16 series as the baby sibling. Apple borrowed the naming convention from companies like Samsung and Google.
Design
Right off the bat, we see that Apple carried over the notched display design that adorned the iPhone up until the iPhone 14 series. While the bezels are much slimmer than what we saw on the iPhone SE 3, the notch gives it a dated look.
Apple added the Action Button to the iPhone 16e, which allows you to open different apps or summon Visual Intelligence, Apple’s take on Google Lens.
As for the display, we’re looking at a compact 6.1 inches. It’s protected with Ceramic Shield. As for the rest of the body, it’s made from aluminum, as one would expect, and it’s dust and water-resistant.
Sadly, the iPhone 16e only comes in two colors, Black and white. That’s rather boring, to be honest. It seems likely that people would buy the iPhone 16e for their kids. Apple could have delivered some funner colors.
Camera
On the back, we see that Apple has stuck with one camera. This is what the company called the Fusion Camera, and it has a 48MP resolution. Apple says that it combines the function of two cameras in one- revolutionary technology, or marketing babble? Anyway, the company says that it can provide up to 4x the resolution of older iPhones (though, it didn’t mention which iPhones it’s talking about). We’re sure that it bins the resolution down; maybe to 16MP.
Apple says that the camera has an “integrated 2x telephoto”. It didn’t say “telephoto lens”, it just said “telephoto”. So, we’re sure that it just zooms in digitally. Lastly, the camera can record in 4K.
Other stuff
Since Apple got rid of the fingerprint scanner on its affordable phone, the iPhone 16e has face unlock. You can use it to authenticate yourself to unlock your device, confirm payments, use Apple Pay, and more.
As one would imagine, the iPhone 16e will come with iOS 18 and yes, it will have Apple Intelligence. We don’t know what features Apple will bring, specifically, so we don’t know if it will come with the full suite of AI tools.
The iPhone 16e also comes with Crash Detection and satellite connectivity. Powering this experience, it comes with the Apple A18 chip.
All in all, it looks like people will be getting an experience as powerful as an iPhone from a generation or two ago, which is still powerful. Frustratingly enough, the company kept saying it was more durable than “an older iPhone” or the battery lasts 12 hours longer “than an older iPhone.”
However, it didn’t mention which older iPhone it was referring to. At the beginning of the video, it mentioned that the iPhone 16e was 80% more powerful than the iPhone 11. Seriously, Apple? That’s like Google saying that the Pixel 9a is 80% more powerful than the Pixel 4.
In any case, it looks like the iPhone 16e will be a powerful and fully-featured device. People who want to get a taste of the iPhone life without paying a lot will go for this phone.
Price
While it’s not as expensive as the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e will still cost you a chunk of change. The phone starts at $599 for the 128GB variant. That’s a pretty tough price to swallow, especially since the iPhone 16e is designed to be the more budget-friendly option. $600 is still a pretty substantial amount considering that there are some extremely amazing Android phones for that price (and lower) that offer 4x the storage, a powerful chip, and a ton of features.
What’s fortunate is that the rumor of it starting with 64GB wasn’t true, which is great. You can pre-order your iPhone 16e starting Friday, February 21st, and it will go on general sale on February 28th.
