A lot of phone makers love to tout how many megapixels their cameras packed. It’s not hard to see why. These are numbers that are easily marketable. But the reality is that constantly shooting with a 108MP sensor isn’t practical because file sizes are huge and will fill your phone’s storage fast. Well, the good news is that Samsung might have found a happy middle that will allow future Galaxy phones to shoot 24MP photos.
Future Samsung Galaxy phones can shoot 24MP photos
According to a recent Android Authority report, it appears that code strings discovered in the Camera Assistant for One UI 8.5 reveal a future option for Samsung Galaxy phones to take 24MP photos using the stock Camera app.
As it stands, the stock Camera app on Samsung’s phones only allows users to shoot photos in 12MP, 50MP, or 200MP (on phones that have the 200MP sensor). The problem with these options is that for 12MP photos, it won’t be as detailed. Especially compared to the 50MP and 200MP photos. However, it is more storage efficient.
As for the 50MP and 200MP options, you get better details. However, the dynamic range is a bit lacking. And like we said, the file sizes are huge and will eat in your phone’s storage a lot faster. Based on Android Authority’s findings, this 24MP option is a happy middle. Users will get better details compared to the 12MP option, but the file sizes should remain somewhat reasonable.
Other camera upgrades from One UI 8.5
In addition to possibly giving users the option to shoot 24MP photos using the stock camera app, One UI 8.5 is also expected to introduce other camera-related upgrades. According to a recent report, it has been suggested that the update will allow Galaxy phones to support pro filmmaking gear.
Our phones have definitely gotten better at taking photos and videos. However, it does lack certain things that professional equipment has. With this update, it will give videographers more options if they want to use their phones as their main camera.
The One UI 8.5 update isn’t available yet. However, it is expected to see a release in early 2026, possibly alongside Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S26 series. The Galaxy S26 is currently rumored for a February 2026 announcement and could see a release in March.
