Sky-high RAM prices may delay the PS6 and next Xbox launches

AH DualSense PlayStation 30th Anniversary

RAM could be the reason for a potential delay of the PS6 and whatever the next Xbox is called, according to a new report that mentions the industry is worried about the increase in RAM prices. This is understandable, given that RAM across the board has increased in cost. For the consumer, buying up sticks of RAM for a PC build currently costs a whole lot more than it used to. It’s an unfortunate side effect of several different factors, not the least of which is the fact that manufacturers such as Micron are exiting the consumer RAM market in favor of AI data centers.

This is not too unlike NVIDIA, which hasn’t exited the market of consumer GPUs, but it has shifted much of its attention to them. Thereby lowering the amount of stock available for sale to consumers. Which, in turn, raised prices both from retailers and third-party resellers. Naturally, the sharp increase in price for RAM has raised concerns with manufacturers. The issue facing them now is what it will cost them to produce the upcoming hardware, and whether or not they will still be able to offer competitive pricing to consumers.

For consoles, competitive pricing is extremely important. Consoles have always been the less expensive option when it comes to a gaming machine. Though that could be changing with the launch of the next Xbox. As this is supposed to just be a high-powered Windows PC with the Xbox Home Screen Experience.

Console manufacturers debate whether to delay the PS6 and the next Xbox over RAM prices

Increased RAM prices are an issue that isn’t going to go away anytime soon. It’ll likely carry into and through 2026. According to Insider Gaming, this has resulted in console manufacturers debating whether or not to delay hardware launches. The PS6 and the next Xbox are rumored to be coming to market sometime in 2027 or 2028. At least, that was the case.

Now, with the higher price of RAM, this may be changing. Manufacturers might choose to wait out the increase until prices come back down. In doing so, this might allow them to keep console pricing within a mostly affordable range for consumers. There’s no confirmation on any of this so far, but it’s a perfectly reasonable debate to have. So, it would make sense if console manufacturers were considering a delay.
