Oppo Built a Tri-Fold Phone to Rival Samsung—Then Put it in a Drawer

The foldable phone segment seems to be growing rapidly. What was once a niche market is now trying to become mainstream. The next big thing appears to be tri-folding devices, although there are only a couple of players in the market so far (Galaxy Z TriFold and Huawei Mate XT series). That said, it seems a big name in the industry is jumping ship early. Despite having the technology ready, Oppo recently confirmed that it has no immediate plans to release a tri-fold device to the public.

Oppo confirms Tri-Fold phone prototypes exist, but they aren’t for sale

The revelation came directly from Oppo’s product management, which noted that the company didn’t just consider the idea—they actually built it. Multiple prototypes of a tri-fold or three-paneled phone exist within Oppo’s labs. In a candid update, a company official even joked that these functional units are currently sitting in his office drawer.

For fans of mobile innovation, this might feel like a missed opportunity. Seeing a working prototype suggests that the engineering hurdles, such as creating a durable dual-hinge system, have already been cleared. However, building a cool gadget and launching a viable consumer product are two very different challenges.

The problem with going triple

Oppo’s hesitation (via Android Authority) likely stems from the harsh reality of the current foldable market. Brands like Huawei and Samsung have pushed forward with high-profile tri-fold launches, but the economics are difficult to ignore. These devices are notoriously expensive to produce and even more expensive for the average person to buy.

Reports say that even the biggest companies in the industry have a hard time making money off of these very expensive phones, which can cost more than $2,400. For a company like Oppo, the risk of putting out a niche product with a very high price tag might be too high.

Waiting for the right moment

This doesn’t mean Oppo has given up on the foldable category entirely. The company has a strong track record with its “Find N” series. Many praise these phones for having a more user-friendly aspect ratio than their competitors. By keeping its tri-fold designs in the drawer for now, Oppo appears to be playing a long game—waiting for manufacturing costs to drop and consumer demand to stabilize.
