It’s tough times out there for anyone who wants to upgrade to an RTX 5090 GPU, thanks to a recent price increase that has shot the cost up to levels that are high enough to make your jaw drop. The RTX 5090 was always an expensive GPU; however, shortages in RAM and tariffs have caused the cost to go up on all kinds of products, and GPUs are unfortunately part of that list of products. This isn’t the first price increase that we’ve seen, but current costs are so high that it makes you wonder if it’s really worth spending that money.
A big reason for this at the moment is the lack of available RTX 5090 GPU stock from retailers directly. In just about every case, it seems, retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and others don’t have direct stock available for customers to buy. You will, however, find stock of those cards at some of those retailers. They just come from third-party sellers and not the retailers themselves. So, it’s basically just another scalper situation. Sellers are just taking advantage of supply and demand to skyrocket the costs of these products in hopes of making a quick buck.
With the current RTX 5090 price increase, it sort of makes more sense to buy an RTX 5090 prebuilt PC
The RTX 5090 was never cheap, but it’s never been nearly as much as a full-on prebuilt PC with an RTX 5090 in it. Until now. According to VideoCardz (via TechRadar), retailers like Newegg have most RTX 5090 GPUs listed at around $4,000. Amazon has some listed for as little as $3,599.99, with many also hovering around the $4,000 mark. That’s double the MSRP that NVIDIA quoted when it announced the RTX 50-series GPUs. At this price, it makes more sense to dump all that money into an entire prebuilt PC than to build one on your own.
You might not be getting exactly what you want down to the smallest detail, forgoing the choice to pick out every aspect of your build piece by piece, but it’ll likely save you a ton of money. With the price of RAM having shot up as well, there’s a good chance that you could spend several hundred dollars more than a prebuilt with an RTX 5090 inside after you buy all the components.
All of this being said, it’s worth noting that these prices are only this high because they’re coming from third-party sellers. The regular full price hasn’t really changed. Unfortunately, official stock that comes directly from retailers isn’t available at the moment. So these prices are what consumers are stuck with. This also shouldn’t be too surprising, as price increases on these cards have been suspected since the end of last year.
