There are many messaging apps that allow users to change the chat’s theme or wallpaper. It’s not exactly a new feature per se. However, if you’re someone that uses Google Messages frequently, it looks like more customization is headed your way with “Chat themes.”
Google Messages gets new Chat themes feature
Currently, Google Messages has some customization baked into it. This comes in the form of the ability to change the colors of message bubbles and backgrounds. Google introduced the feature in 2024, but now, the company is taking it further.
This new feature actually replaces the “Change colors” feature and offers a deeper level of customization. With this change, users can select from different color palettes according to what they feel like. They can also select from different wallpapers Google bundles with the app. These wallpapers are broken down into different categories. They range from Animals, Architecture, Black & White, Cityscapes, Landscapes, and more. However, users can also choose images from their own photo gallery if they prefer.
That being said, it’s worth noting that these changes only apply to you. This means that whatever customization you choose, only you will see it. This is versus other apps, like Instagram’s DMs, where when you apply a theme, everyone in that chat can see it.
Slowly rolling out
If you’re using Google Messages and don’t see this new feature yet, don’t worry. As 9to5Google notes, they aren’t seeing the change on their devices yet. However, this is par for the course for Google.
The company typically rolls out changes in stages and phases instead of all at once to catch any breaking bugs that might appear. It’s hard to say when it will make its way to everyone, but keep an eye out for it. If you want to check if you received it, the “Change colors” option will turn to “Chat theme.”
