Samsung Is Reportedly Building a Rollable Smartphone — and You'll Actually Be Able to Buy It

Samsung rollable patent

According to a new report, a rollable smartphone could finally make its way to the market. Based on this report, Samsung is developing the device, and unlike some concepts and unreleased models we’ve seen, you should actually be able to buy this one.

Samsung is making a rollable smartphone, and it’s allegedly coming in H1 2028

The information comes from a South Korean outlet, Maell Business. The report states that the goal is to launch the first rollable smartphone in the first half of 2028. It is said it could launch alongside the Galaxy S28 series.

The phone is expected to be called the Galaxy Z Slide, and it could feature a 10-inch display when stretched out. That display could offer a 16:9 aspect ratio, with around 440 ppi. There’s even some mention of a second model coming in 2030.

That’s a lot of information to take in after a long pause when it comes to rollable phones. Rollable smartphones have proven to be tricky for smartphone OEMs, as we haven’t seen a single one available in the market thus far.

LG had a rollable ready to go, but it decided to ditch smartphones altogether

LG seemingly had one ready to go years ago, right before the company decided to kill off its smartphone business. That prototype even made it into the hands of various content creators and tech media in recent years.

It is said that rollable phone screens are the biggest challenge. It’s difficult to make them roll thousands of times without getting too creased, uneven, and so on. It seems like Samsung has an idea how to do that.

Samsung has been developing displays for such use for years. Even back in 2023, at CES, the company showed off the Flex Hybrid, which combines folding and sliding. Then later that year, the Rollable Flex prototype was shown off.

Samsung has the technology to pull this off, and it could push others to follow suit

Samsung has the technology to bring a rollable phone to life, and it seems like it will finally do so. The company is still dominating foldable smartphone sales, though the percentage is decreasing as the competition is growing.

Rollable smartphones could be a brand new market for Samsung, and a way for the company to truly innovate once again. Samsung basically brought foldables to life, and now it’s looking to do the same with rollable smartphones. We do hope that the report is true, as we’d love to use a rollable phone. This could also push other smartphone OEMs to follow suit, which could result in competing rollable phones.
