Design is always a subjective topic, which might be pleasing to some and not so much to others. Like it or not, YouTube Music seems to be gearing up for a major redesign of the Now Playing screen with a new fullscreen cover art. This follows the split-view redesign from earlier this year. Before you get excited, it’s currently in the testing phase and is not publicly available yet.
YouTube Music is reportedly testing fullscreen album art for Now Playing
Currently, the artwork in the YouTube Music Now Playing screen appears between the audio/video switcher and the title, with rounded corners. The redesign, as shared by a Reddit user, takes up the entire screen, including the system navigation bars and status. As immersive as the new screen appears to be, it might significantly crop out the artwork compared to the previous square shape.
This new design also applies when watching music videos as well. This suggests how portrait/short form like videos have taken over the internet. It seems like something that users are comfortable watching.
Not widely available yet
The pill-shaped action buttons now have transparent backgrounds, and YouTube Music appears to be no longer using artwork-based colors on this screen. The design sort of resembles the Now Playing interface from Google Play Music. This isn’t an entirely new design idea, but definitely a step up if you were bored with the tiny artwork.
As said, Google looks to be testing this new Now Playing redesign with a select few users. It isn’t widely available yet, even if you have the latest version of the YouTube Music app on your device. Since it’s in the testing stage, there are chances the company might abandon this entirely and revert back to the current design. Things could go either way. We will share an update when we hear more.
