Samsung Ramps Up Galaxy Z Fold 8 Production as Prioritizes Wide Foldables Over Flip and Ultra

Samsung has tweaked its manufacturing strategy to heavily favor its upcoming passport-shaped form factor. According to a recent supply chain report, the tech giant adjusted its component orders for its next-gen foldable devices. More specifically, Samsung plans to produce 2.8 million units of the wide-display Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, putting it above the Ultra and Flip models.

For reference, production of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (previously the traditional standard variant) targets 2 million units. On the other hand, the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 8 aims to reach 1.5 million units. This pivot, reported by Korean outlet ETnews, marks a swift departure from initial corporate plans that split assembly lines even between the Wide and Ultra.

The race to define the 4:3 standard

Samsung’s massive production bet centers around a fresh 4:3 aspect ratio, a shape that mimics a small notebook or passport. The device features a 7.6-inch external display and a 5.4-inch internal workspace when closed. This shorter, wider geometry directly addresses the needs of a sector of users complaining about the tall, cramped “remote control” outer screens of older iterations.

Industry analysts view this bet as a direct preemptive strike against Apple. The Cupertino rival plans to enter the foldable arena this autumn with a similarly proportioned device, widely expected to debut as the iPhone Ultra.

Two paths to erasing the screen crease

The upcoming July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event will also showcase a massive durability upgrade called Flex Titanium display technology. To combat the screen crease, Samsung is ditching traditional internal polymer layers for a stiff titanium-alloy film. The upgrade will reportedly result in the glass folding from sagging over the hinge. This framework sits on top of a micro-perforated titanium plate that flexes seamlessly without cracking, reinforcing the panel from underneath to minimize the visible dip.

Leaked technical data shows that Apple is tackling the same structural hurdle with a completely different engineering philosophy. Instead of reinforcing the screen from below with titanium plates, Apple’s design utilizes custom Ultra-Thin Glass that is chemically shaved to be thinner at the hinge crease and thicker at the edges for rigidity. The iPhone maker will also reportedly rely on 3D-printed hinges with fewer moving parts and a specialized expanding adhesive to mask any physical dips when the panel opens.
