Galaxy Z Fold 6’s initial sales are surprisingly lower than Z Fold 5

Samsung’s newest foldable offering, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (review), seems to be off to a rough start. The Z Fold 6 has received a poor response from consumers globally, resulting in lower initial sales than the Z Fold 5. According to Ice Universe, Samsung managed to sell only 270,000 units of the new foldable during the first two weeks since it became available.

Even with all the upgrades and Galaxy AI features, the new foldable wasn’t able to capture the attention of the buyers.

Samsung reportedly sold only 270,000 Galaxy Z Fold 6 units in the first two weeks

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has met with a poor response in the brand’s home market as well as globally. As per the source, the brand managed to sell just 270,000 Fold 6 phones globally in the first two weeks. The phone’s pre-orders in South Korea were significantly less than the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

Furthermore, Ice Universe claims that Samsung sold 420,000 units of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 (review) in the first 14 days globally. This means a total of 690,000 units of the Fold 6 and Flip 6 were sold in the first two weeks. Despite the latest Qualcomm flagship chipset and major Galaxy AI features, the initial sales of the new phones were abysmal.

Notably, a ZDNet Korea report last month suggested that Samsung was able to pre-sell 910,000 units of its latest foldables. These pre-sales were recorded in South Korea during the July 12 and July 18 period. In comparison, last year’s Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 broke records for the highest pre-sales of foldable phones. The pre-sales of last year’s models exceeded 1.02 million units. It’s worth mentioning that many of these pre-orders may have been canceled before the phones could ship. Still, the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have garnered poorer sales than their predecessors.

Samsung may soon launch the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition to make up for the poor sales

Despite the slow sales of the Z Fold 6, Samsung doesn’t appear to be giving up on the foldables yet. The company is reportedly planning to launch a Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition in the coming weeks. The new phone is said to be slimmer than the Z Fold 6. The Special Edition could measure 4.9mm when open and 10.6mm when folded. In comparison, the Z Fold 6 measures 5.6mm around the waist when open and 12.1mm thick when folded.

Samsung could make up for the Z Fold 6’s poor sales by offering a major camera boost on the Special Edition variant. The device could borrow a 200MP main camera from the S24 Ultra. The phone is expected to launch later this year, though the brand hasn’t yet confirmed anything officially.
