Galaxy Z Fold 6's paint may peel due to unofficial chargers

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 AM AH 1

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 arrived this year as Samsung’s latest foldable phones. The Fold is the more premium and capable of the duo, but several users aren’t satisfied with one aspect in particular. Galaxy Z Fold 6 owners have been reporting a paint peeling issue on their expensive devices. Recent reports claim that the South Korean giant is working on a “Special Edition” of the phone.

Samsung’s latest Fold starts at $1,900 in the US, so the least its buyers would expect is top-notch durability and build quality. It can be quite frustrating when a device you spent so much money on starts showing issues after just a few days of use. This is particularly frustrating when those issues result in permanent damage to the phone’s aesthetic appeal.

Samsung blames third-party chargers for paint peeling on the Galaxy Z Fold 6

For days now, reports of paint peeling on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 have surfaced on Reddit. It seems that they were numerous enough to reach Samsung’s ears. The South Korean giant created a section on its website to try to explain the situation. Unofficial chargers and even other accessories you’ve plugged into your Galaxy Z Fold 6 are to blame for the visible paint chips, according to the company.

Apparently, there are two key elements that lead to the problem. First, there’s the Z Fold 6’s anodized metal finish that makes it more durable and long-lasting, but it’s also more prone to showing signs of damage from improper electrical grounding. Then there’s the leakage current effect, which occurs when you charge and hold the phone simultaneously, causing small amounts of current to “leak” through where it shouldn’t. Samsung asserts that unofficial chargers may fail to properly ground the device. This, in turn, leads to leakage current that causes the device’s paint to peel.

EMS massagers could also cause the problem

Samsung mentions not only third-party chargers, but also EMS massagers. These types of accessories draw power directly from the phone through the USB-C port. For this particular case, the company recommends that you “place the Galaxy device away from you so that it doesn’t touch any part of your body.”

Of course, there are users who are unhappy with Samsung’s official word on the issue. They feel that the company is washing its hands of a potential manufacturing problem. Anyway, only time will tell if the problem continues to escalate and forces the company to take further action.
