Gmail users will soon be able to switch their email address without starting over. Google is reportedly working on a much-awaited feature that will allow users to change their Gmail username (or email address) while keeping the same account, data, and history. This will effectively eliminate the need to create a new Gmail account just to get a different username.
Gmail will soon allow its users to switch email addresses
As of right now, there’s no way to change the original email address on Gmail. Once assigned, it becomes yours and cannot be customized later. The only way to get a new username was by creating a new account. This setup works, but it is too confusing and time-consuming. However, Google is reportedly working on a solution. A recently updated Google Account support page now suggests Google plans to change this system. It may soon allow users to switch address names directly within the same Gmail account.
According to the updated Support page, users will be able to replace their existing Gmail address with a new one. The feature seems to be in the initial rollout phase. And oddly enough, shows up only in Hindi, suggesting Google published the information before a full launch. Once the feature goes live, the users should be able to modify their Gmail address while keeping the existing linked data and Google services intact.
All linked data and Google services will remain unaffected
Some more changes are coming as well. When the user changes their Gmail username, the old username will not be deleted. Instead, Google will treat it as the old username and an alias tied to the same Google Account. So basically, emails sent to both the new and old usernames will reflect in the same account. Users can also sign in and send messages using both addresses. The old username will be safeguarded, meaning no one will be able to claim it until the account is active.
The preservation of the old Gmail username is necessary. This is because of the fact that we end up linking the email to thousands of different accounts. And changing or updating the email later on every individual account is practically impossible. Further, there will be some restrictions to prevent misuse. Users can switch address settings only once every twelve months. Google will also limit accounts to four Gmail usernames in total, including the original one.
