A recent durability test of the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold has exposed some major weaknesses of the device. No doubt, the phone shows bold, beautiful, and extremely thin and precise engineering. But its test results suggest that it is the most fragile foldable Samsung has made so far. This raises some concerns about the long-term durability of the gadget.
Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold durability test
Samsung has precisely designed the Galaxy Z TriFold to be extremely thin. The frame of the device measures just 3.9mm at its thinnest point. As for the build, the company is using Armor Aluminum for the outer frame, ceramic glass fiber reinforced polymer for the back panels, and titanium parts inside the hinges. The design is so delicate that the company had to add a warning system that alerts users if they fold the device in the wrong order.
One of the major weaknesses of the device is its screen. The outer screen uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. In the JerrryRigEverything‘s test, the outer screen scratched at level six and showed deeper marks at level seven. The main screen, or the inner display, uses a typical plastic protective layer. This one gets scratched very easily and is so delicate that it can even be damaged by a fingernail.
The device is no less than a long-term durability nightmare
The durability test also shows that the Galaxy Z TriFold has poor heat resistance. The outer screen failed after seventeen seconds of flame exposure. On the other hand, the main display stopped working after just ten seconds. It is not very resistant to dust either. The hinge part produces loud grinding noises, and the worst part? Its internal magnets attract metallic particles from the dust.
The device also failed the bend test miserably. It became the first Samsung device to fail the test completely. Moreover, the device relies only on an aluminum frame for cooling, with no thermal paste or vapor chamber. In a nutshell, the device is not a very sustainable choice for long-term durability. The repair costs, in case of any damage, could be extreme. The test concludes that this phone is best suited only for very careful users. Further, the device must be strongly protected from dust, pressure, and rough handling.
