Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition's Zoom Ring is Intentionally Wobbly

Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the company’s current flagship, packed with goodies like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, Leica-powered optics, and so much more. The company is offering a special Leica Edition, which features a physical rotating bezel called the Master Zoom Ring. Well, it appears that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition’s zoom ring is a bit wobbly, but it’s intentional.

The Master Zoom Ring is a physical ring with 20 high-strength ball bearings with an internal optical displacement sensor that allows for smooth focus adjustment. It appears that the ring is moving from side to side, and it’s apparently also making a clicking sound. If that makes you nervous after spending a fortune on such a premium device, don’t fret, as it’s intentional.

On Weibo, a Q&A article by Xiaomi sheds some light on this. The mechanical zoom ring uses a sandwich-style structure composed of 26 individual components. To prevent deformation of the outer frame during drops, and to avoid rotation jamming caused by dust or liquid ingress, both radial and axial movement tolerances are apparently intentionally built into the design.

As a result of this, users may feel a slight movement, and there’s a faint sound when tapping it. This shouldn’t affect the functionality of the ring. Xiaomi says this will not compromise the phone’s IP66, IP68, or IP69 dust and water resistance ratings, which is assuring.

It doesn’t affect the functionality

Furthermore, the company adds that during trial and mass production, the Master Zoom Ring went through several rounds of testing, including exposure to dust and water, high heat, drop tests, humidity, and long-term rotation use. As for functionality, users can customize the Master Zoom Ring to perform several functions. These include rotating left or right to launch the camera quickly, activating camera modes, and more.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra will debut globally around early 2026, possibly in the first quarter. We may see the vanilla Xiaomi 17 alongside.
