Hardware-wise, it’s quite clear that Samsung took a conservative approach with the Galaxy S26 series. The company is focusing on optimizing its existing hardware rather than replacing it entirely. That doesn’t mean there’s a complete lack of changes, though. In particular, the Galaxy S26 Ultra brings some noteworthy camera upgrades, though Samsung didn’t dedicate much time to these features during the official announcement.
These imaging upgrades, highlighted by SamMobile, take advantage of the 200MP main sensor’s brighter aperture, the power of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, and Samsung’s updated algorithms. The goal is to deliver a compelling generational improvement.
Galaxy S26 Ultra’s camera upgrades include boosted high-resolution photography
Samsung has offered a 200MP sensor for a few generations now. However, taking a photo at full resolution often meant sacrificing dynamic range. Historically, these massive files lacked the multi-frame HDR processing that makes 12MP shots look so balanced. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra finally changes this. Users can now capture 200MP images that benefit from full HDR and noise reduction, resulting in high-resolution shots that actually look polished rather than just large.
24MP: A new sweet spot for detail
For many users, 12MP feels too small, but 50MP files take up too much storage. Samsung has found a middle ground by introducing a 24MP mode directly into the standard camera app. This feature uses a system called AI Fusion, which blends the color data of a 12MP image with the sharpness of a 50MP shot. Although you need to enable it via the Camera Assistant app from the Galaxy Store, it offers a sweet balance of detail and dynamic range for everyday photography.
Pro Portrait effects made simple
Portrait mode enthusiasts will appreciate the integration of “Virtual Aperture.” This tool, previously tucked away in the advanced Expert RAW app, now lives in the main camera interface. It allows photographers to digitally simulate different aperture values, giving them precise control over the bokeh—or background blur—when snapping photos of people or pets. While the lens itself doesn’t move, the software does a convincing job of mimicking a variable depth of field.
Smarter motion captures
Finally, a small but practical change has arrived for Motion Photos. In the past, this feature recorded a brief video clip for every single photo you took, often wasting storage on static landscapes. The Galaxy S26 Ultra introduces an “Auto” setting that uses AI to detect movement. If the camera sees a moving subject, it saves the clip; if the scene is perfectly still, it only saves the photo. It is a simple optimization, but one that makes the gallery much cleaner and saves valuable space over time.
