Google is going all out to integrate its AI model, Gemini, into its first-party apps. The tech giant is now reportedly testing a new Gemini-powered Ask Maps feature for its Google Maps mobile app. The feature is designed to let users ask questions and plan activities through a conversational interface. A recent APK teardown suggests the company might be planning for the tool’s official release soon.
Google Maps mobile app will soon get a Gemini-powered Ask Maps feature
A recent APK teardown of the Google Maps Android app version 26.07.01.867227976 reveals Google is testing a new Gemini-powered feature. In the app, a new “Try New” menu has been enabled, and inside it, the Ask Maps tool is listed as an experimental option powered by Gemini. Clicking on the Try Now button launches a bottom sheet on the map view. Its functionality remains limited for now. However, the activity does suggest the company is already internally testing it.
Further, Ask Maps appears as a completely new tool on the homescreen of the Google Maps app. It is separate from existing listing-based prompts. When tapped, it opens a Gemini-style conversation panel with suggested questions to guide first-time use. The feature may be positioned as an assistant that turns casual thoughts into practical travel plans directly within the app. This improves user experience and makes planning trips and journeys more convenient.
Gradual rollout of the feature is expected to begin soon
Moreover, the string code found within the app references a banner explaining that spots are currently full. This hints at a controlled rollout. In the future, Google may invite a small group of users to opt in first. Their feedback would help refine how Ask Maps responds, what suggestions it offers, and how deeply Gemini should be integrated. Once the testing is officially over, the company may release it for the stable audience.
Anyway, do keep in mind that Google has not yet shared any official statement regarding the feature, and an APK teardown doesn’t mean the feature will surely land in the stable version.
