Google's At A Glance Widget gets rid of terribly frustrating design feature

Google‘s At A Glance widget has gotten a design update that should make it a lot more enjoyable to use for the majority of people who have access to it. The At A Glance widget is easy to miss if you’re not really sure what it is, but it’s a very helpful feature that Google added to the Pixel launcher some time ago. It sits in the top left corner of your homescreen. Typically, it will show things like the date, the current temperature, and the weather. It can also show other details like earthquake alerts, upcoming calendar events, and even package delivery details. All without having to open any apps to check those same things.

As the name suggests, At A Galance was designed to give users a quick way to glance at their phone and see important information. There was one fairly annoying issue that has been plaguing this feature, however. The terribly frustrating design sometimes makes it hard to read.

The At A Glance widget’s design update makes it much easier to see the information it displays

This small but very meaningful design update isn’t a sweeping change to how things look, but sometimes it’s the simple things that really make the biggest difference. At least, that’s how it is in this case. As pointed out by 9To5Google and Android Police, the At A Glance widget now has a transparent background behind it to help display the text.

As mentioned above, the information in the widget can be hard to read sometimes. This is due to the type of wallpaper. Some wallpapers just don’t display the white text that well. Thankfully, this new transparent background for the widget makes the white text stand out a lot more. As 9To5Google notes, the background helps with white and black text, too. Additionally, it’ll be visible on the lockscreen as well as the homescreen.

This change is reportedly rolling out to users who are running the latest Android QPR3 update. So, it might still be a little while before this rolls out to all users running on Android 16.
