YouTube recently confirmed that TV was the primary device for viewing in the United States. To boost its platform’s big-screen experience, YouTube is now testing a new conversational AI tool. The feature is designed specifically for televisions, gaming consoles, and streaming devices.
YouTube is testing conversational AI to boost big screen experience
Last year, the CEO of YouTube, Neal Mohan, said that TV has overtaken other devices as the main way people watch content in the US. Due to the shift, the streaming giant rolled out numerous updates across 2025 aimed at improving navigation, recommendations, and overall usability of its platform. Now, Google is reportedly testing a new conversational AI tool to complement the YouTube-watching experience on big screens.
In a recent support thread, the company confirmed that it is indeed testing the new AI feature. The tool mirrors the existing Ask button found on YouTube’s mobile and desktop platforms. Viewers who have used the Gemini sparkle icon to interact with videos on smaller screens may soon see the same option appear while watching on television. The goal is to make the overall viewing experience more interactive and smarter.
The smart AI feature is set to hit a broader audience soon
This is not the first time Google has been testing a conversational AI tool. It was actually introduced back in 2024. It allows viewers to summarize videos, request recommendations, and ask questions directly related to the content they are watching. In some devices, users can also type in manual prompts to get the desired results.
On TV screens, the Ask button will appear on the watch page for select videos. Users can activate it through the microphone button on their remote. The system will display suggested prompts and generate answers in real time. For now, the feature is limited to a small group of users as part of testing. If it does not appear, either the account is not included in the testing, or the selected video is not supported. The company is expected to expand support in the coming weeks.
