There could be a big change in the mobile industry. A new report says that OnePlus and Realme are officially combining their departments. They are moving under a single “sub-series product center” instead of working as completely separate businesses.
The latest information comes from the reliable Digital Chat Station on Weibo. The report says that the new center will be in charge of all product development, both in the US and abroad. Regarding leadership, Li Jie is now in charge and reports directly to Pete Lau (Liu Zuohu). Wang Wei, formerly Realme’s VP, is now moving into a deputy role. Plus, Xu Qi will now oversee the marketing and service systems in this “combined brand.”
OnePlus & Realme merge: What is behind this move?
This news arrives at a delicate time for OnePlus. Recently, plenty of reports have questioned the brand’s long-term future, especially in Western markets where things have felt a bit uncertain. The parent company seems to be looking for efficiency by folding their product and marketing teams into one.
For us, the users, this means the line between a OnePlus phone and a Realme phone might get even thinner. While they’ve shared technology before, this is a formal union of the people who actually design and sell the devices.
A new chapter for the “Never Settle” brand
The big question now is how this affects the identity of each brand. OnePlus has always targeted the tech enthusiast crowd. On the other hand, Realme specialized in the low-cost, high-performance market. The merging could make the experience more consistent for everyone. However, it could also kill the “uniqueness” in both brands.
Whether this helps OnePlus regain its footing in the West or simply turns both into a unified “sub-brand” remains to be seen. For now, the days of these two acting as independent rivals seem over.
