The Windows 11 Start menu has been a point of contention since the operating system launched. This UI item has received backlash for its rigid layout and “Recommended” section that refuses to stay hidden. However, it seems Microsoft is finally paying attention to the feedback. According to reports, Microsoft is working on a much more customizable Start menu for Windows 11.
Windows 11 to let you disable the “Recommended” Start Menu section with more customization
One of the most requested changes involves how much space the menu occupies. Currently, Windows 11 decides whether you see a “small” or “large” Start menu based on your screen resolution. If you have a massive monitor but prefer a compact menu, you are essentially out of luck. The new update, part of a broader project internally codenamed “Windows K2,” will reportedly allow users to manually toggle between these sizes regardless of their hardware setup.
Beyond just resizing, Microsoft is allegedly making the menu modular, Windows Central reports. For years, users have complained that even when they clear out the “Recommended” feed, the empty space remains as a placeholder. New leaks suggest that the updated WinUI 3-based menu will allow you to toggle off entire sections.
If you don’t use the recommended feed, you can simply hide it. If you don’t like pinning apps, you can disable that section too. Sources suggest you might even be able to hide the “All Apps” list entirely, creating a minimalist experience that stays out of your way.
Speed under pressure
Performance is the other half of this equation. We have all experienced that frustrating lag where the Start menu takes a few seconds to pop up because the PC is busy with a heavy task. Microsoft wants to fix this by making the menu more responsive with a rebuild.
The goal is for the menu and its search bar to feel fluid even when the CPU is under intense load. This means no more “ghost typing” where the first few letters of your search are missed because the system couldn’t keep up with your keystrokes.
There is no firm release date for these features yet. However, it should arrive sometime in 2026.
