GTA 6 starts console-only because consoles have the core player base

GTA 6

GTA 6 has been in the news a little more recently of late, and this time it revolves around the game being a console-exclusive game for at least the start of its lifecycle. Make no mistake, GTA 6 will eventually come to PC. Like past titles, however, Take-Two and Rockstar Games view console players as their core group of players, and as such, are making the console launch of GTA 6 a priority. This is really nothing new, as a console-only launch at the start was confirmed quite a while back.

However, Zelnick has recently stated a slightly more in-depth reason for choosing to launch initially on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, before turn their attention to the PC platform. GTA 6 is expected to launch on November 19, 2026, provided it doesn’t end up with another delay. Zelnick recently spoke at the iicon game conference and stated that he thinks a lot of people are going to be calling sick that day. Suggesting that GTA 6 is on schedule and the release date hasn’t changed.

During the same conference, A Bank of America securities analyst suggested that the game should cost $80. Mainly because it would standardize an $80 price tag for other studios and publishers. In other words, investors would make more money. Of course, launching on PC from the start would probably make the game some more money as well. But there are probably a few reasons Take-Two isn’t taking this approach.

GTA 6 being a console-exclusive in the beginning opens the door for more sales

According to a new report via Bloomberg, Zelnick spoke about the “terrifying expectations” of GTA 6. He also specifically noted that the game is coming to console first because console players are the company’s core group of players. “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core, Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”

To put another way, Zelnick believes that by really nailing the launch with console players, it’ll have a much better chance to nail it with PC players. This is sound reasoning and it’s an understandable approach. PC players will be eagerly awaiting their chance to play the game. And if they see how good it is on console, they will probably want the game even more. Of course, there will undoubtedly be people who buy the game on console that buy it on PC as well. So this gives Take-Two and Rockstar a chance to double up on sales.

Zelnick doesn’t say this part of the reason, of course. However, it’s an easy way for the publisher to drive up sales numbers, because several other studios have done the exact same thing. The most famous, of course, is Bethesda, which has released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, on just about every single platform imaginable.
