Travel is a luxury not all of us can afford. But if you’ve also been curious about places, what about exploring them from the comfort of your own home? You can do so through the new Google Earth flight simulator feature that lets you fly all around the world for free using 3D maps directly from your browser.

Google Earth “flight simulator” lets you fly around the world with free 3D maps

Now, most of us are probably more used to Google Maps to navigate our way through cities and countries we’re visiting. But if you prefer taking a more topological approach, Google has announced a new flight simulator feature for Google Earth that basically lets you fly all over the world from your browser.

According to Google, “We’ve recently added many our most powerful professional desktop features to web. Elevation profiles, new import types, but there’s always been one other feature you’ve been asking us to add to the web version of Google Earth, just for fun.”

Now, obviously this won’t offer the same level of depth and detail like Microsoft’s Flight Simulator software. But considering it’s free and you can access it anytime through your browser, we reckon it’s good enough.

Some things to consider

There are certain things to note though. For starters, Google says it’s only available on the web, at least for now. We can’t be certain if the company has plans to eventually bring it to mobile. Secondly, it only offers very basic and simplified flight physics. If you’ve come from other flight simulators, you might want to lower your expectations. Google says, “The flight simulator is designed for casual exploration rather than high-fidelity aerodynamic training.”

Lastly, your internet connection is important. This is because Google uses dynamic loading. This means that buildings and images only load on demand, which means that it only starts loading as you approach. If you fly too fast or if your internet connection is spotty, you might get some delays.

So, if you are curious about it, you can go to Google Earth in your browser, click “Explore Earth,” open the Tools menu, and select Flight Simulator and you’re good to go. Have fun!
