Sony may have just teased the PS6 handheld, and it has seemingly done so in a pretty obvious yet subtle way. A PS6 handheld is something of a unicorn for PlayStation fans. Many gamers have wanted Sony to release a new handheld for years. Since the discontinuation of the PS Vita, Sony’s last handheld, fans have clamored for Sony to come out with a follow-up machine.
What fans got was the PlayStation Portal. To its credit, the Portal is an awesome handheld. Even when it was just for remote play from the PS5, it was a cool way to open up game time for those with busier lives. Now, it has the cloud gaming feature, which lets you play games from your PS5 library directly from the cloud instead of streaming from your console via remote play.
This works much better than remote play in my personal experience, but it’s still missing one major thing. It’s not local gameplay. What PlayStation fans truly want, is a new handheld that plays games locally. Not through the cloud and not through remote play. Sony may finally be delivering on this front.
PlayStation’s CEO has potentially teased the PS6 handheld
Rumors of a handheld console alongside the PS6 have been floating around for several months now. So the rumor of a new handheld’s existence isn’t really anything new. However, these are still just rumors. That rumor has now evolved into a potential teaser.
PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino recently spoke to Famitsu in an interview and stated that Sony is “leveraging technologies that can be used in various forms and locations” as part of its strategy for developing new game console experiences.
Obviously, this isn’t a direct confirmation that a PS6 handheld is coming. However, given the past rumors, and this new subtle hint, it seems pretty likely. If you owned a PSP or a PS Vita, then you know how special it was to have your PlayStation library playable on the go. Even if you didn’t own one of those older consoles, you may own a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Look at how popular those are with fans. A PS6 handheld that delivers a similar experience would most likely result in similar popularity. So here’s hoping that Sony is truly making this hardware.
