This month, Google announced “Notebooks” for its Gemini AI-powered chatbot. At first, you needed a paid subscription to use the feature. The company is now making the “Notebooks” feature available for free all users through Google Gemini Web.
Google Gemini’s Notebooks: A workspace for your projects
Standard chat histories that can get cluttered, making it difficult to find what you are looking for. However, the Notebooks feature allows you to group conversations, files, and sources under specific topics. This section now appears in Gemini’s side panel, tucked between “Gems” and “Chats.”
The real strength of this tool lies in its memory. When you work within a notebook, Gemini uses all the saved content as context for its future answers. If you are planning a trip or researching a specific topic, you don’t have to re-explain the details every time you start a new session. For those who prefer a clean slate, Google has also included a toggle to turn off this notebook memory whenever necessary.
The NotebookLM sync
Perhaps the most significant aspect of this rollout is the seamless integration with NotebookLM. Now, Google’s specialized research assistant and chatbot sync automatically.
This means that if you gather information using Gemini’s web search, you can save that data to a notebook and instantly access it within NotebookLM. Then, you can use NotebookLM’s advanced features like Video Overviews or Infographics. This makes it easier to copy and paste information between different AI tools.
Usage limits and availability
While the feature is now free, Google has established a tiered system for how much data you can store. Gemini’s Free, AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans offer access to up to 50, 100, 300, and 600 sources per notebook. For most students or hobbyists, the 50-source limit on the free tier is likely more than enough to manage a standard project.
Currently, the Notebooks feature and its sync capabilities are exclusive to the web version of Gemini. Mobile and desktop app users will have to wait a bit longer for access.
